How to Find the Right Toilet Flush Valve

Follow these 5 simple steps to identify a compatible flush valve—no plumbing expertise required! Start with basic observations, then take key measurements to avoid mismatches.

Step 1: Locate Your Toilet’s Brand & Model

Why this works:

Most toilets have a manufacturer’s label inside the tank (under the lid) or on the back of the bowl. The label includes the brand (e.g., Toto, Kohler, American Standard) and model number.

What to do:
  • Remove the tank lid (set it on a soft surface to avoid cracking).

  • Look for a sticker or embossed text with the brand and model.

  • Search online for "[Brand] [Model] flush valve"—this will give you the exact replacement part (no guessing!).

If there’s no label: Proceed to Steps 2–5 (they’ll cover all compatibility factors).

Step 2: Determine the Valve Type (Flapper vs. Canister)

Two main types (not interchangeable!):
  • Flapper-Style Valve: Has a rubber flapper (the "stopper" we discussed earlier) attached to a chain. Common in older toilets and standard residential models. The valve base is a round opening sealed by the flapper.

  • Canister-Style Valve: A tall, cylindrical canister that lifts straight up to flush (no flapper). Found in modern high-efficiency toilets (HETs) or dual-flush models (e.g., Toto EcoPower, Kohler Cimarron).

Tip: If you see a rubber flapper, it’s a flapper-style valve. If you see a cylindrical plastic piece, it’s a canister-style.

Step 3: Measure the Tank’s Bottom Opening (Critical!)

Tools you’ll need:
Tape measure or ruler                Flashlight (to see inside the tank)
How to measure:
  • Look at the large hole at the bottom of the tank (where water flows out to the bowl).

  • Measure the inner diameter of this hole (from one side to the other, through the center).

Common sizes:
  • 2 inches (50mm): Industry standard for most flapper-style valves.

  • 3 inches (76mm): Used in high-flow or HET toilets (more powerful flushes).

  • 1.6 inches (40mm): Rare (older low-flow or compact toilets).

Critical: The flush valve must match this diameter—too big = won’t fit; too small = leaks!

Step 4: Confirm Single vs. Dual Flush

Match the valve to your flush type:
  • Single-Flush: One handle/button that releases a fixed amount of water. Works with standard flapper or canister valves.

  • Dual-Flush: Two buttons (small = partial flush, large = full flush) or a handle that clicks twice. Requires a dual-flush-specific valve (usually canister-style) to control water flow.

Note: A standard single-flush valve won’t work in a dual-flush toilet (it can’t adjust water volume).

Step 5: Verify Mounting & Seal Compatibility

Final checks to avoid leaks:
  • Mounting Bolts: Count the bolts securing the flush valve to the tank (most use 2 bolts; some compact models use 1). Choose a valve with the same number of bolts.

  • Base Gasket: The rubber gasket at the bottom of the valve must match the tank’s opening. If you’re replacing an old valve, keep the gasket to compare (or buy a valve with a universal gasket set).

  • Proprietary Designs: If your toilet is a high-end brand (e.g., Toto, Kohler), some models use proprietary valves. Generic valves may fit but double-check with the brand’s specs.

Quick Compatibility Checklist

Check ItemWhat to Confirm
Brand/ModelExact match (if labeled)
Valve TypeFlapper or Canister (matches existing)
Opening Diameter2", 3", or 1.6" (matches measurement)
Flush TypeSingle or Dual-Flush (valve designed for this)
Mounting Bolts1 or 2 bolts (matches existing)
Pro Tip for Beginners: If you’re unsure, remove your old flush valve (it’s easy—disconnect the chain/handle, unscrew the mounting bolts, and lift it out) and bring it to a hardware store (e.g., Home Depot, Lowe’s). Staff can match the size, type, and mounting to a replacement. This is the most foolproof way to avoid mistakes!
